
He started hosting a social issues-based talk show, Satyamev Jayate, in 2012. He started his own production house - Aamir Khan Productions Pvt Ltd - in 1999. Some of his next successful projects included the 1997 comedy Ishq - which also starred Ajay Devgn in one of the lead roles, Ghulam in 1998 - which also launched him as a playback singer, and Sarforosh and the critically acclaimed 1947 Earth in 1999. He bagged his first best actor Filmfare award for his role in the 1996 movie Raja Hindustani. Adding to his versatility, he played the role of a street-smart orphan in the critically acclaimed 1995 hit Rangeela. Though the movie failed to make an impression at the box-office initially, it became a cult classic later on Khan played one of the male leads alongside Salman Khan in the 1994 comedy-drama Andaz Apna Apna. His next commercial successes such as Dil in 1990, Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin in 1991 and the 1992 movie Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar established him as a romantic hero.

After appearing in supporting roles in a few movies, Khan made his debut as a lead actor in Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, released in 1988. He used to do theatre and worked as an assistant director before becoming an actor. Aamir Khan first appeared on the silver screen as a child artist in the 1973 movie Yaadon Ki Baaraat and then in Madhosh the following year.
